Q&A with Mary Beth Oakey
What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part is getting to interact with all of our clients and hear their unique stories. In the higher ed space, we work with so many people who truly care about the impact they are making within their school and the academic community as a whole. It’s great to be a part of that and hopefully, we get to relieve a little of their day-to-day stress knowing they have Up&Up to rely on as a partner in their efforts.
What do you want others to remember you for?
I want people to remember me as being someone they could turn to for advice, a shoulder to cry on, or a friend to make you laugh. I really value strong connections with people.
What’s your favorite hobby?
I love to explore Greenville with my husband and our two dogs, Moose and Daisy. I’m especially interested in any spot where I can get a great slice of pizza and a brown ale.
How did you decide to get into your current work role?
I actually somewhat stumbled into my current role. I changed my major multiple times in college, finally landing on journalism — even though I don’t love to write. I was a marketing manager for a boutique in college and then an account executive, but really a jack of all trades—part social media manager, digital manager, and account exec—at a small agency right after college. This then led me to become an account executive at Up&Up.
What excites you?
Music really inspires me. No matter what mood I’m in or what’s going on in my life, I can almost always find the perfect song to sum it up.
